Our Vision and Mission
The Center for Entrepreneurship at the Fisher College of Business is an official academic center of The Ohio State University. Launched in November 2001, the Center supports academic research, education and community engagement in entrepreneurship. The Center strives to advance both the science and practice of entrepreneurship so as to stimulate economic growth and development through new company formation, technology commercialization, and improved competitive performance of entrepreneurial ventures.
The founders of the Fisher Center for Entrepreneurship believed that the Center could be the global leader in the development and dissemination of entrepreneurship theory and practice. From this vision, the mission was derived. The mission of the Center for Entrepreneurship is to:
- advance scientific research and development in the field of entrepreneurship;
- provide the highest quality instruction in entrepreneurship, including grounded experiential learning opportunities; and
- stimulate economic growth by accelerating new company formation, enhancing technology commercialization, and improving the strategic and financial performance of high-potential entrepreneurial ventures.
Our mission is derived from three core values:
- to lead the advancement of science and practice in entrepreneurship;
- to educate aspiring and practicing entrepreneurs in the art and science of value creation; and
- to serve the entrepreneurship community (broadly defined) through the effective design and delivery of value-added programs aimed at strengthening the economy.

Winners of the 2009 Competition - Congratulations!
1st Place Team - Nanofiber Solutions
Nanofiber seeks to apply newly patented technologies to cell culture, drug screening, cancer research and other biomedical fields to increase research speed and effectiveness.
Nanofiber mats will be used to create three-dimensional microenvironments that will recapitulate the in vivo (in the body) environment, facilitating faster drug screening and more effective cancer research.
2nd Place Team - Bionovations
Eighty percent of all deaths from heart attacks, the leading cause of death, are caused by the rupture of vulnerable plaque. However, physicians are currently unable to detect vulnerable plaque in a clinical environment.
Bionovations provides the world's first proprietary diagnostic tool for evaluating patients for life-threatening vulnerable plaque, with huge profit potential due to patent positioning and significant first mover advantages.

Camp named one of the nation’s top entrepreneurship professors
S. Michael Camp, academic director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at Fisher College of Business, was named one of the nation’s top entrepreneurship professors by FORTUNE Small Business magazine in September 2007.
Camp and 17 other professors were recognized as the nation’s best through a survey of colleagues, students and entrepreneurs in the magazine’s first compilation of America’s Best Colleges for Entrepreneurs.
“In the relatively short time that Michael has led the Center for Entrepreneurship, he has fostered and nurtured the entrepreneurial spirit of many students not only in Fisher College but throughout Ohio State,” said Stephen L. Mangum, acting dean of Fisher College. “This recent recognition is a remarkable honor and is reflective of Michael’s passion for preparing innovative start up companies to succeed.”
The magazine commended Camp’s efforts that led to the creation of the Technology Entrepreneurship and Commercialization Academy, an interdisciplinary program that teaches graduate students to assess the commercial potential of new technologies. Camp told the magazine that interest from physics, engineering, medical, agriculture and law students have been overwhelming.
“The program is at the forefront of developing viable commercialization strategies for new ventures,” Camp told the magazine.
The Center for Entrepreneurship also has been instrumental in providing mentorship to several start up corporations, including two that were named finalists in the FORTUNE Small Business magazine’s annual national business plan competition. Vertebration Inc., developers of a spinal implant designed to relieve chronic back pain, won the national competition in 2004, while Minimally Invasive Devices Inc. (MID) earned third place in the 2006 Fortune Small Business competition.
Both teams qualified for the competition after winning the annual Deloitte Business Plan Competition, which is open to all Ohio State students and is hosted by the Center for Entrepreneurship. The quality of the business plans and the amount of prize money awarded to the winners have both increased due to changes in the curriculum since Camp’s arrival at Fisher three years ago.
Camp has also made it a priority to make his courses available to all Ohio State students. He helped launch the interdisciplinary entrepreneurship minor in conjunction with five colleges across the university. The program is open to all undergraduate students.
